In 2013 I began photographing images in books (found in my own collection, my parents, as well as the St. Joseph County Public Library). The images include those of caves, archeological sites, lunar landscapes, forests and ghost towns, among others. They are places for exploration, imbued with the potential to experience something unexpected.
Black and white laser prints of the photographs are used as material to create collages and constructions which act like small monuments along a path. I make ink drawings of them with the thought of creating a new book as a log of my travels. Now internalized, the original collages and constructions are destroyed, leaving only my rendered versions.
This is my visual metaphor for how we internalize the images we see — creating memories of spaces and places we experience.
